Denver Broncos fans were initially lukewarm when the team selected Devaughn Vele in the 7th round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Outside of Broncos supporters who also follow the Utah Utes, few were familiar with Vele, making his late-round selection a bit surprising.

While not universally disliked, a quick glance at the reactions on Twitter/X after the Broncos picked Vele shows the fan base’s frustration. Comments like “Waste of a pick,” “Only pick I really hate, dude is 40,” and “I don’t see the vision on this one” captured the general sentiment. During a goal-to-go drill from the 7-yard line, quarterback Jarrett Stidham targeted Vele with a pass that only he could catch. Using his 6-foot-4 frame and impressive catch radius, Vele extended to make a spectacular one-handed grab and secured the ball as he went to the ground.

This play showcased Vele’s potential as a standout player, and the Broncos may have landed a hidden gem in the draft. Initially, it was hard to see how Vele would make the 53-man roster, but after his impressive performances in training camp, it seems unanimous among those watching that Vele is earning his spot. Despite being 26 years old, which is older for a rookie, Vele’s age won’t matter as long as he keeps making plays on the field. He’s got a significant opportunity in Denver, and whether it lasts four, six years, or more, he’s determined to make the most of it.

Even before this standout practice play, Vele was considered our top wide receiver to watch, among many talented contenders, heading into the preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts. Vele is expected to see plenty of action on both offense and special teams as he works to solidify his place on the roster.
