Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Klay Thompson reportedly sustained an injury during Thursday night’s preseason game. The 34-year-old veteran had overcome pre-game nerves ahead of the Mavericks’ second preseason matchup against the Utah Jazz at the American Airlines Center, but his success on the court came with a price.
Many fans are still adjusting to seeing Thompson in a Mavericks uniform after his long tenure with the Golden State Warriors. His debut with Dallas carried extra pressure as he aimed for a comeback season with his new team. Here’s the latest on Thompson.
Klay Thompson’s Preseason Game 2 Performance
After sitting out the first preseason game against the Memphis Grizzlies, Thompson expressed his excitement about the new chapter in his career, telling ESPN, “I’m just excited to experience a new chapter… It’s going to be special. I just know it.”
Thompson contributed 10 points and three assists, going 3-for-5 from both the field and beyond the arc, but the Mavericks fell to the Jazz 107-102. Despite the loss, his three-point shooting was a standout moment, even if it didn’t quite match his legendary performances during his “Splash Brothers” days with the Warriors.
Discomfort Following the Game
Following the loss, Thompson reportedly experienced discomfort, particularly in his back. Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd shared that Thompson had participated in a walk-through practice but required treatment afterward. According to The Smoking Cuban’s Noah Weber, Thompson revealed that his back had tightened up but expressed confidence he’d be “ready to go” for the Mavericks’ next preseason game against the Clippers.
Thompson Isn’t the Only Injured Maverick
Thompson’s injury adds to a growing list of sidelined Mavericks players. PJ Washington also suffered a hip injury but has been participating in no-contact practices, while key players like Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and others are dealing with various ailments. As injuries pile up, concerns about the team’s NBA Finals prospects are growing.
