Bulls Open Preseason with Gritty Win Over Cavaliers
The Chicago Bulls kicked off their 2024 preseason campaign against the Cleveland Cavaliers, showcasing new roster additions and changes to the coaching staff. The game was a tale of two halves: the Bulls struggled to find rhythm in the first half but turned it around with a strong, consistent performance in the second.
As expected in typical Bulls fashion, the game came down to the wire. With just seconds left on the clock and the Bulls clinging to a narrow lead, rookie Matas Buzelis stepped up. His confident contest on Craig Porter Jr.’s last-second three-point attempt secured a 116-112 victory for Chicago.
Matas Buzelis Makes an Impression
Buzelis made an impact in his debut, finishing with 12 points, five rebounds, three assists, and a series of highlight-worthy plays. He was dynamic in transition, whether finishing at the rim or using his sharp court vision to create scoring opportunities. This performance could earn him valuable minutes in the Bulls’ regular-season rotation.
Bulls Guards Shine
The Bulls’ backcourt was a major contributor to the win. Ayo Dosunmu sparked the team with his defensive energy after checking in midway through the first quarter. He immediately made a statement by stealing the ball from Donovan Mitchell and converting it into a transition dunk, finishing the game with 10 points.
Josh Giddey struggled with his shot early, going 1-of-4 in the first half, but found his rhythm in the second, ending with 11 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Coby White led the Bulls in scoring with 21 points, showcasing his scoring versatility by hitting shots from beyond the arc, at the free-throw line, and inside the paint.
Cavaliers Starters Show Midseason Form
Cleveland’s core four starters—Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen, Donovan Mitchell, and Darius Garland—all played 19 minutes each and displayed midseason form. Mobley, in particular, stood out with 19 points, six rebounds, and three blocks, reminding fans why the Cavs finished fourth in the Eastern Conference last season.
What’s Next?
The Bulls return home on Saturday to face the Memphis Grizzlies in another exhibition matchup. The Grizzlies, currently retooling their roster, are excited to see the healthy returns of Ja Morant and Marcus Smart, along with the addition of rookie center Zach Edey. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT on CHSN.
