HOUSTON – Few voices resonate as strongly in the Astros’ clubhouse as that of second baseman Jose Altuve, the 14-year veteran and clear leader of the team.
After the team’s 5-2 elimination loss to the Tigers in Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series, Altuve addressed the possibility of losing another key player. He emphasized the importance of re-signing third baseman Alex Bregman, who is set to enter free agency.
Altuve expressed that he would be “heartbroken” if Bregman doesn’t return next season.
“I don’t want to imagine my last game with Breggy,” he stated. “I’m confident he’ll be our third baseman next year. We need him. The organization wouldn’t be the same without him. I believe there’s no chance this is his last game.”
This sentiment was echoed by Bregman’s teammates, who praised his leadership and impact on the team. Bregman was the only player to address the team after the loss, commending their resilience. Pitcher Justin Verlander described him as “one of the most impressive baseball minds and competitors” he’s encountered, noting his commitment to helping others improve.
Drafted second overall by the Astros in the 2015 MLB Draft from LSU, Bregman made his Major League debut the following year and reached the AL Championship Series in each of his first seven full seasons—a streak that ended this year as he prepares to become a top free agent.
“Since he joined us, the entire organization has moved in a positive direction,” Altuve said. “He has significantly improved this team. I truly hope he stays here and has the chance to retire as an Astro.”
On the franchise’s all-time hitting leaderboard, Bregman ranks sixth in home runs (191), seventh in doubles (265), eighth in runs (694), ninth in RBIs (663), and 11th in hits (1,132). He also shares the sixth-most career postseason home runs with 19.
Reflecting on his journey, Bregman said, “I came here at 21, made my debut against the Yankees, and reached the ALCS every year except this one. It’s been an incredible experience, and I truly cherish every moment. I’m honored to be here and don’t take it for granted.”
Those close to Bregman suggest he wishes to remain in Houston, where his wife is from. Astros general manager Dana Brown indicated plans to speak with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, about a potential extension after the season.
“I hope so,” Bregman said regarding his desire to return. “We’ll see what happens. I’ll leave that to Scott and the team. This is my first experience with free agency.”
Altuve, who signed a five-year, $125 million extension prior to this season to ensure he finishes his career in Houston, has seen star players like George Springer, Carlos Correa, and Gerrit Cole depart in recent years. Despite those losses, the team has continued to succeed, primarily relying on homegrown talent.
“I’m confident Breggy will stay here,” Altuve affirmed. “He’s a leader and likely one of the best players in our franchise’s history.”
