Packers running back Josh Jacobs has been a key player for his new team, despite not scoring a touchdown yet. After racking up 104 total yards in Week 1 and a 151-yard rushing effort in Week 2, it’s clear Green Bay made a solid move in the free-agent market. However, with Jacobs logging 32 carries last game, running back depth is critical. That depth took a hit today as rookie third-round pick MarShawn Lloyd was placed on injured reserve, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Lloyd missed the season opener due to a hamstring injury but made his debut last weekend as the RB2 behind Jacobs. He played just three fewer snaps than second-year back Emanuel Wilson but saw one more carry and a passing target. With Lloyd now on IR alongside A.J. Dillon, Wilson will take on a larger role as Jacobs’ primary backup. Wilson, who had 14 carries for 85 yards as a rookie last year, will need to step up.
Chris Brooks, an undrafted rookie signed from the practice squad, will also join the rotation. Brooks, who impressed with the Dolphins last season, ran for 106 yards on just 19 carries. Together, Wilson and Brooks will aim to ease Jacobs’ workload, especially with Lloyd sidelined for at least four weeks and Dillon’s future with the Packers uncertain. Keeping Jacobs fresh will be crucial as the season progresses.
