New York Mets superstar shortstop and NL MVP candidate Francisco Lindor exited Friday’s 11-3 win against the Phillies due to lower-back soreness. To strengthen their middle infield while Lindor recovers, the Mets have called up a familiar name: Luisangel Acuña, the younger brother of Braves’ star Ronald Acuña Jr., from Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets made the announcement on Saturday, along with a corresponding move to send outfielder DJ Stewart to Triple-A.
Acuña, 22, is best known for being part of the trade that sent Max Scherzer to the Texas Rangers. With Lindor day-to-day and second baseman Jeff McNeil sidelined by a broken wrist, Acuña is set to get opportunities for playing time in the middle infield. Though he hasn’t put up eye-popping numbers at Triple-A this season—hitting .258 with seven home runs—his speed and defensive versatility stand out. Acuña has tallied six triples, 40 stolen bases, and has looked solid at shortstop, second base, and even center field.
Luisangel Acuna’s outlook with the New York Mets
The Mets are currently thin at middle infield, with only Jose Iglesias and Eddy Alvarez available. Since Alvarez joined the team after September 1, he won’t be eligible for the postseason roster if the Mets make it. If Lindor’s injury lingers, Acuña could become a key piece for the Mets, potentially more than just a pinch-runner or depth option.
As the Mets cling to their playoff hopes, holding a one-game lead for the third NL Wild Card spot, every game is crucial. Even if Acuña doesn’t start regularly, his versatility and ability to play multiple positions make him a valuable asset for late-game situations.
