A solid rushing attack might hold the key to an early-season win against Buffalo.

The Miami Dolphins are gearing up for a crucial Thursday Night Football showdown against the Buffalo Bills, both teams entering at 1-0. However, history is not on Miami’s side, as they’ve lost 11 of the last 12 matchups with the Bills. Since Josh Allen joined Buffalo in 2018, the Dolphins have gone 2-11 against him, despite having three different head coaches during that span. Only Adam Gase and current head coach Mike McDaniel have managed to secure a victory over Allen.

In those rare wins, the Bills still dominated key areas such as time of possession, plays run, and third-down efficiency, while Miami struggled to commit to the run game. This lack of balance has been costly, especially on fourth downs, where the Dolphins have often gambled unsuccessfully. In their 11 losses, they’ve gone just 8-of-21 on fourth down, with four of those defeats being by 17 points or more. To stand a chance this time, Miami must run the ball consistently and take advantage of every scoring opportunity, even if it means settling for field goals.

Josh Allen has been a thorn in Miami’s side, often rushing for more yards than the Dolphins’ own running backs. Keeping Allen off the field will be crucial to limiting his playmaking ability. De’Von Achane, who’s dealing with an ankle injury, returned to practice and is a game-time decision. Meanwhile, Raheem Mostert is out, but Jaylen Wright is ready to step up if needed.

Mike McDaniel must commit to the ground game, even with the temptation to rely on star wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Controlling the clock and playing smart, conservative football could be Miami’s best shot at pulling off an early-season divisional win.
