Patrick Bailey lifted a ground-rule double over the left-center field wall with one out in the bottom of the ninth, driving in Tyler Fitzgerald and securing a 3-2 walk-off win for the San Francisco Giants over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday afternoon.
Bailey accounted for all three Giants’ runs, while starter Blake Snell, the National League’s August Pitcher of the Month, was removed after a taxing first inning.
The game was tied since the fourth inning, and Fitzgerald opened the ninth with his second hit, a single off Arizona reliever Kevin Ginkel (7-3). Bailey followed with a deep shot between the Diamondbacks’ outfielders, sealing the Giants’ 11th walk-off win of the season.
Ryan Walker (9-3) earned the victory with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
The Diamondbacks scored all their runs in a chaotic first inning, with Snell laboring through 42 pitches. After a leadoff single by Geraldo Perdomo, the inning included two walks, an infield single, a throwing error by Fitzgerald, and a passed ball by Bailey, preventing the Giants from limiting the damage to one run.
The Giants tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-out, two-run single by Bailey, redeeming his earlier error after Michael Conforto singled and Matt Chapman doubled.
Arizona starter Merrill Kelly pitched seven strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out eight without a walk.
Fitzgerald, Bailey, and Conforto each had a double and a single for the Giants (69-72), snapping a four-game skid and keeping their slim playoff hopes alive.
Perdomo tallied two singles for the Diamondbacks (79-62), who remain in second place in the NL wild-card race. Arizona, which scored 14 runs in the first two games of the series, was held to just four hits while being outhit 9-4.
