When the Miami Dolphins signed free-agent receiver Odell Beckham Jr. earlier this offseason, many expected the team to boast one of the most formidable wide receiver trios in the NFL. However, with training camp nearly complete and the regular season approaching, Beckham Jr. has yet to participate in practice after being placed on the physically unable to perform list last month.

His absence has been particularly evident to quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who shared his concerns with reporters on Monday about not having the opportunity to develop chemistry with his new target. “Off the field, I’ve spent a good amount of time with him [Beckham Jr.],” Tagovailoa said. “He’s a great guy, no doubt. But does that connection translate on the field? I honestly can’t say because we haven’t had reps together. That’s just the truth.”

Beyond building rapport with Tagovailoa, Beckham Jr. will need to regain his rhythm and adjust to the team’s system. Despite being a nine-year veteran with five 1,000-yard seasons, three Pro Bowls, and two Second Team All-Pro selections, Beckham Jr. has only played 14 games over the past two years and has missed 34 games since the 2019 season.

Tagovailoa emphasized the importance of getting on the same page with Beckham Jr. as soon as possible. “One of the first things I want to do with Beckham Jr. is run routes on air,” Tagovailoa added. “I need to get as many reps with him as possible. Whether he’s going in for a rep, I want to make sure the timing is right, the coverage is set, and that everything’s clicking.”
