Falcons’ Risky Bet: Did Atlanta Overlook Red Flags When Trading for Matthew Judon?
The Atlanta Falcons made a bold move to strengthen their defense for the 2024 NFL season, trading a third-round pick for veteran edge rusher Matthew Judon. Despite knowing the risks of acquiring a 32-year-old player recovering from a major injury, there might have been another concern.
Judon, who turned 32 on August 15, played only four games last season with the New England Patriots. Despite recording four sacks and nine QB hits in that limited time, the Patriots showed little interest in signing him to a long-term deal this summer.
Instead, Judon’s name quickly surfaced in trade rumors, with New England shopping him around as he sought a new contract. The Falcons and Chicago Bears both expressed interest, and the Patriots allowed Judon to choose his destination.
Judon opted for Atlanta, seeing it as a contender. In his first press conference, he stated that he wouldn’t push the Falcons for a new contract and wanted to prove himself in 2024. While this may have won over some fans, Judon seems to have left New England on less favorable terms.
Reports suggest he wasn’t as well-liked by coaches and the front office as many assumed. According to Albert Breer, Judon’s behavior behind the scenes had worn thin with the Patriots, contributing to their willingness to move on from him.
Breer also noted that similar issues arose during Judon’s time with the Baltimore Ravens. While he isn’t labeled as a bad guy, his social media presence and behind-the-scenes actions reportedly caused some frustration within the organization. When Judon became a problem this summer, the Patriots were ready to move him off the roster as they sought to build a new culture.
It’s important to note that when a prominent player leaves a team, there’s often a tendency for negative information to be leaked, whether completely accurate or not, as a way to sway public opinion. Despite the concerns from his previous teams, Judon now has the opportunity to work under head coach Raheem Morris, who is highly respected by players and known for his defensive expertise and leadership. Given that the Falcons are considered contenders and Judon is on a one-year deal, there’s little reason to believe that his personality quirks or social media behavior will cause any significant issues this season.
