Bryce Young’s rookie season with the Panthers was far from stellar, with a disappointing 2-15 record and an 11-10 TD-INT ratio. The high expectations from Carolina’s trade-up for the top pick didn’t materialize. But there’s hope for a turnaround this fall under new head coach Dave Canales, who revitalized Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield’s careers. On Saturday, Young flashed some of the promise that made him a top NFL prospect.
In the Panthers’ first drive against the Buffalo Bills in the preseason, Young was impressive, completing 6 of 8 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. The improved performance of Carolina’s pass-catchers and offensive line contributed to his success, a stark contrast to last year’s struggles.
“It was fantastic,” Canales said post-game. “Bryce extended plays, kept his eyes downfield, and demonstrated progress from practice. We saw players creating space and making plays, which is crucial for us… Bryce looked sharp.” Despite facing mostly Bills backups, Young’s composed performance was a promising sign. As the Panthers shift focus to their Week 1 road game against the New Orleans Saints on September 8, Young’s preseason display offers a positive outlook.
