Kris Letang has been a key player for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ defense since his NHL debut in the 2006-07 season, following his selection as the No. 62 pick in the 2005 NHL Draft. However, amid some challenging times for the team, speculation about Letang’s possible departure has resurfaced.
Tim Benz of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review referenced Mark Madden, who on the Madden Monday podcast mentioned that discussions had taken place between the Penguins and the Montreal Canadiens about a potential trade involving Letang, based on his request. Madden noted, “I heard there were talks about getting Letang to Montreal at his request, but nothing materialized. So it’s unclear where this will go.” Letang’s ties to Montreal are well-known, and during his previous contract negotiations, there were already rumors of a possible move to the Canadiens, who could greatly benefit from his veteran presence and leadership as they enter a rebuilding phase for the 2025 season.
As a Montreal native, the notion of Letang returning home to strengthen the Canadiens’ defense is plausible. His addition could enhance their blue line and mentor emerging players like Kaiden Guhle, Arber Xhekaj, David Reinbacher, and Lane Hutson. Although Letang signed a six-year, $36.6 million extension in 2022 with the expectation of finishing his career in Pittsburgh, his current contract includes a full no-movement clause, giving him significant control over any potential move.
