Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drove in four runs, including a pivotal three-run double as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks rally to defeat the Miami Marlins 10-8 on Wednesday night.
Jake McCarthy and Geraldo Perdomo also went deep for the Diamondbacks, who completed a three-game sweep and boast the best record in the majors at 31-13 since July 1.
“Someone seems to step up every night,” McCarthy noted. “There’s a belief here that even if we’re down late, we’re never really out of it. From top to bottom, no matter how the lineup looks, we put together something good every night.”
Trailing 6-3, Arizona mounted a four-run rally against relievers Jesús Tinoco and Andrew Nardi (3-2). Josh Bell’s RBI single made it 6-4 before Gurriel hit a shot to the center field wall, clearing the bases.
“He’s an excellent pinch hitter,” said Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo. “He stays engaged and came through in a big moment.”
Gurriel replaced Miami native Adrian Del Castillo, who had two singles in the game. Del Castillo was substituted for Gurriel to face the left-handed Nardi, a move that disappointed Del Castillo’s family and friends in the stands.
“I was tempted to make a few moves earlier in the game but wanted to build an inning and keep the right options available on the bench,” Lovullo said. “There were some tough decisions. Taking Del Castillo out almost got me booed out of the arena.”
Perdomo added a solo home run in the eighth, extending the lead. José Herrera then hit an RBI triple in the ninth and scored on Gurriel’s single.
Dylan Floro (5-3) earned the win by getting the final out in the sixth, and Kevin Ginkel followed with a perfect seventh inning. Joe Mantiply allowed an RBI double to Vidal Brujan in the eighth, cutting the lead to 8-7.
Justin Martinez took over from Mantiply and struck out Xavier Edwards before getting Jake Burger to ground out, ending the inning.
In the ninth, Miami loaded the bases against Martinez after Jesús Sánchez hit a leadoff double, Derek Hill added a single, and Otto López walked. Sánchez scored on a wild pitch, but Martinez struck out Kyle Stowers and David Hensley to secure his fifth save.
Marlins manager Skip Schumaker was ejected in the eighth inning after disputing a called third strike on Edwards with plate umpire Gabe Morales.
Burger hit his 25th homer and 15th since the All-Star break for the Marlins, who have now lost six of their last seven games, dropping to a league-worst 46-81.
“The offense performed well, but the seven walks we gave up against a strong-hitting team hurt us,” Schumaker said. “We couldn’t hold the lead late in the game.”
The Marlins overcame a 3-2 deficit with a four-run fourth inning against Diamondbacks starter Jordan Montgomery. López tied the game with an RBI double and scored on Cristian Pache’s two-run homer. Edwards also contributed an RBI triple.
Montgomery gave up six runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out four.
“They were having good at-bats, fouling off pitches, and staying on the ball,” Montgomery said. “I felt like I was making good pitches, and I’m glad I could go deep into the game.”
McCarthy hit a two-run homer off Marlins starter Roddery Muñoz in the third inning, giving Arizona an early lead.
Muñoz exited after allowing three runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings, with three walks and three strikeouts.
Burger’s two-run homer in the first inning gave the Marlins a 2-1 lead, driving Montgomery’s first pitch over the left-center wall to give Miami an early advantage in the series.
The Diamondbacks scored their first run when Pavin Smith hit a sacrifice fly to deep center in the first inning.
