As the Baltimore Ravens wrap up training camp, GM Eric DeCosta continues to impress by unearthing hidden gems in recent seasons. One position that might still be on his radar for improvement, albeit less pressing than earlier in the summer, is the interior offensive line. According to Bleacher Report, Green Bay Packers’ OL Royce Newman could be a viable trade target.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine identified the interior offensive line as the Ravens’ second biggest need, recommending, “Add Now: IOL Royce Newman, Green Bay Packers (trade).”
Ballentine further elaborated, “The franchise has a solid track record with offensive linemen, but they’re counting on inexperienced players like Andrew Vorhees and Daniel Faalele to step into starting roles.”
The offensive line, particularly its interior, has been a source of concern for Ravens fans, given the uncertainty surrounding who will be protecting MVP QB Lamar Jackson. The Ravens lost both starting guards from the 2023 season, John Simpson and Kevin Zeitler. Ballentine notes, “Royce Newman has fallen out of favor with the Packers, but he brings valuable experience with 24 starts over three seasons.”
Baltimore could benefit from adding veteran depth to their interior line, as much of their current lineup is largely unproven.
Royce Newman Seeking a Fresh Start?
Newman’s fall down the Packers’ depth chart isn’t promising, with him now listed as a backup. While the Ravens’ current guards have shown promise in camp and preseason, Newman could serve as valuable depth or insurance against injuries.
A fourth-round pick in 2021, Newman started all 16 games as a rookie at right guard, committing only four penalties that season. However, his playing time has diminished since, with just six starts in 2022 and two in 2023. At 27 years old, Newman still has plenty of potential and could handle a full-season workload.
Despite his experience, Newman’s performance metrics from Pro Football Focus aren’t impressive, never surpassing a 60.0 overall grade. His best season was in 2022, with a 57.5 grade.
A significant issue is his tendency to allow sacks—six as a rookie and four in just six games in 2022. While trading for Newman may not be the most obvious choice, a change of scenery could reignite his career in Baltimore.
