The San Francisco 49ers have had a notably eventful 2024 offseason, marked by trade discussions, holdouts, and injuries to key players. With all the off-field drama, the team is likely eager for the regular season to begin without further distractions. One situation in particular has positioned them as strong contenders to sign a star free agent.
San Francisco 49ers Strongly Connected to Star Free Agent
According to the NFL Scouting Department at Bleacher Report, the 49ers should consider signing LT David Bakhtiari immediately. With Trent Williams continuing his holdout from training camp, Jaylon Moore is currently slated as the 49ers’ starting left tackle despite only having seven career starts over three seasons. Bringing in a seasoned veteran like Bakhtiari could provide essential insurance in case Williams’ holdout extends into the regular season.
Though Bakhtiari has dealt with injuries in recent years, if he passes a medical evaluation, he could offer the team a former first-team All-Pro as a backup option at left tackle. Additionally, Bakhtiari, a San Mateo, CA native, might be interested in playing for his hometown team. Before his ACL tear in November 2020, Bakhtiari signed a four-year, $92 million contract extension with the Green Bay Packers. The Packers have restructured that contract over the last two summers. It would be intriguing to see what kind of deal Bakhtiari might accept, especially considering it would likely be far less than what Trent Williams is currently demanding.
