Phillies and Dodgers’ Pursuit of Garrett Crochet Came Down to the Wire
A new report reveals that both the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers were in hot pursuit of Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet as the MLB trade deadline approached. However, despite being two of the top teams in the National League—leading the NL East and West, respectively—the World Series contenders failed to secure a deal for the star pitcher. This was largely due to both teams refusing to meet the high asking price.
The Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers Refused to Part with Top Prospects for Garrett Crochet
According to insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Phillies declined to include their second-ranked prospect, Andrew Painter, who recently underwent Tommy John surgery, in any trade package. Similarly, the Dodgers were unwilling to trade their top prospect, catcher Dalton Rushing, who has begun transitioning to left field after All-Star catcher Will Smith signed a 10-year extension.
Garrett Crochet, who remains under team control through 2025 and is arbitration-eligible, was one of the most sought-after pitchers before the July 31 deadline. His value is heightened by his youth—he’s just 25—and his long-term contract. However, concerns over his workload this season, as he’s already exceeded his previous innings highs, may have also played a role in teams’ hesitation. Crochet is expected to be a hot commodity on the trade market again this winter, with even more competition for his services likely.
