Jake McCarthy blasted two home runs, and Ketel Marte hit his 30th of the season before exiting with a left ankle injury as the Arizona Diamondbacks routed the Philadelphia Phillies 11-1 on Saturday night.
Corbin Carroll also went deep for Arizona, which has now won 14 of its last 17 games, securing a wild-card spot and closing the gap with the Dodgers in the National League West.
Arizona’s starter, Zac Gallen, also left the game early after awkwardly fielding a grounder from Bryce Harper in the fifth inning. Gallen later assured that he was fine and dealing only with cramps.
“I’m not worried about it,” Gallen said. “Just need to hydrate better next time.”
Chase Field was warmer than usual, with a crowd of 46,183, and the summer heat in Phoenix made conditions challenging even in the dome.
The Diamondbacks celebrated last season’s victory over Philadelphia by giving away replica league championship rings, with Marte having been the MVP of that seven-game series. Initially, there was concern about Gallen due to his previous right hamstring injury, which had sidelined him for a month earlier this season.
“I felt like he was grinding through his outing; it wasn’t easy for him,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. “I decided it wasn’t worth the risk, so I took him out.”
Marte also appears to be okay after leaving in the fourth inning.
Phillies catcher Garrett Stubbs turned a ball off third baseman Eugenio Suárez’s glove into a double. As Marte covered second, Stubbs’ head-first slide collided with Marte’s left leg while he was kneeling.
Marte fell in pain but walked off the field with a trainer and was replaced by Kevin Newman.
After the game, Marte said, “I’ll be ready to play Monday” and didn’t hold Stubbs responsible for the slide. “No, he’s a good kid, and he was trying not to hurt me,” Marte said.
Stubbs was apologetic afterward, saying, “It was horrible. I knew I got him good, so I immediately reached for him.”
