A recent report has unveiled the Chicago Bulls’ strategy for the point guard position in the 2024-25 season, and it might catch many fans off guard. This offseason has seen more losses than gains for the Bulls. They lost DeMar DeRozan to free agency, traded away fan-favorite Alex Caruso, and have been surrounded by rumors of actively shopping Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic.
As the team heads towards training camp in September, the point guard position is set to become a key topic once more. With former lottery pick Lonzo Ball leading the offense during the 2021-22 season, Chicago emerged as one of the league’s surprise teams and a formidable force. However, after Ball suffered a knee injury from which he never fully recovered, the Bulls’ performance declined significantly over the next two and a half seasons.
The team never found a proper replacement for Ball, holding onto hope that he would eventually return. Now, after not playing a game since early 2022, the 26-year-old may finally make his comeback this season.
“The Bulls confirmed that Ball has started participating in full-contact 5-on-5 scrimmages — as scheduled for August — and, according to one source, has done so without any setbacks,” the Chicago Sun-Times reported this week.
Josh Giddey Expected to Lead Chicago Bulls’ Offense in 2024-25?
While Ball appears to be nearing a return to the court, he is not expected to reclaim his role as the leader of the starting unit. In the trade involving Caruso, the Bulls acquired 2021 lottery pick Josh Giddey, and the Sun-Times reports that the versatile swingman is expected to take on the role of the primary ball-handler for the upcoming season, rather than Ball.
“A team source reiterated that the Bulls were fully committed to Giddey as the lead ball-handler from the moment they acquired him in the Alex Caruso trade with the Thunder,” the outlet reported. “They see him as a ‘Lonzo Ball-light.'”
