Pittsford, N.Y. — On the 10th day of the Buffalo Bills’ training camp at St. John Fisher University, the defense ramped up the intensity during Monday’s practice.
Coach Sean McDermott orchestrated a scrimmage-style session, with the offense facing relentless pressure from the defense throughout the morning. During team drills, defensive tackle DeShawn Williams collided heavily with slot receiver Andy Isabella during a short pass. Isabella required attention from the athletic training staff and was eventually carted off the field with what seemed to be a leg injury. Following the play, Josh Allen had a few choice words for the defense, leading to a minor scuffle involving backup center Alec Anderson.
The Bills’ defense was dominant at all levels, creating significant disruption for Allen and his offense. The defense forced Allen into difficult throws and limited his completions to keep the chains moving. Linebacker Matt Milano stood out with a stellar performance, disrupting multiple runs and securing a sack alongside safety Taylor Rapp. Milano’s improved play is reassuring for fans concerned about his availability for the season opener.
Here are additional observations from Monday’s practice:
1. Dalton Kincaid Steps Up
With the offense struggling and rain starting to fall, Allen turned to Kincaid to stabilize the situation. On a crucial play, Kincaid made a key reception against safety Taylor Rapp, showcasing his value as a reliable target. With Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis out, Kincaid’s ability to create separation and make plays will be crucial for the Bills this season.
2. Christian Benford Shines
Benford was a standout on defense, effectively covering Mack Hollins and Keon Coleman, preventing them from making plays. His physical style of play is proving difficult for receivers, and his performance against top competition like Rasul Douglas and Kaiir Elam is preparing him for the regular season.
3. Daequan Hardy & Zach Davidson Rising
Hardy made a notable interception off a Mitchell Trubisky pass, demonstrating his growing skills. Davidson also had a strong showing with two key third-down catches and a touchdown reception, prompting excitement for his potential role on the roster. His performance may increase pressure on the Bills to keep four tight ends.
4. A.J. Epenesa’s Pass Deflection
Epenesa recorded a signature pass deflection against Dion Dawkins, showcasing his ability to disrupt passes by reading the quarterback’s eyes and timing his jumps effectively. His play helped stall an offensive drive.
5. Javon Soloman’s Progress
Soloman continued his impressive summer performance with two sacks, including one where he overwhelmed tackle Tylan Grable, who was later penalized for a false start. Soloman is making a strong case for a roster spot as he competes with Kingsley Jonathan.
6. Injury Update
The Bills’ injury report grew longer, with several players missing practice, including running back Ty Johnson, receivers Chase Claypool and Justin Shorter, tackle Travis Clayton, lineman DaQuan Jones, linebackers Edefuan Ulofoshio and Nick Morrow, and safeties Mike Edwards and Cole Bishop. Shorter’s knee injury particularly threatens his chances of making the team. On a positive note, tackle La’el Collins returned to practice after a brief absence.
