While it’s still early in training camp, these five Steelers aren’t showing much promise, putting their roster spots at risk. With several practices completed, it’s exciting to see football return, but many questions about the team remain. Training camp is crucial for answering these questions.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson (3)

Some players have excelled and moved up the depth chart, but others have struggled. Notably, these five Steelers are currently losing their grip on their roster spots:

Steelers Aren’t Relying on Cory Trice Jr.
Cory Trice entered camp with high expectations but hasn’t lived up to the hype. After an injury-shortened rookie year, many expected him to compete for the second outside cornerback spot, but he’s been scarcely used. With seventh-round pick Darius Rush performing well, Trice needs to regain the form that made him a fan favorite last year or risk being cut.

Steelers Have Moved on from Mark Robinson
Mark Robinson, once a promising rookie, finds himself overshadowed by new linebacker additions Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson. The return of special teams star Tyler Matakevich further complicates Robinson’s situation. Despite a decent start to camp, Robinson needs an exceptional performance to secure his spot, but his chances are dwindling.

Defensive Linemen Are Outplaying Isaiahh Loudermilk
Isaiahh Loudermilk, previously a solid backup, is struggling this camp. DeMarvin Leal and rookie Logan Lee have impressed, while Dean Lowry seems poised to secure a spot once healthy. Loudermilk must step up to avoid losing his position on the team.

Pittsburgh Has a Replacement for Cameron Sutton
The Steelers re-signed Cameron Sutton to fill a slot cornerback role, but undrafted rookie Beanie Bishop has been a standout in camp. If Bishop continues to excel, the team may decide they don’t need Sutton, especially with his impending suspension.

Steelers Haven’t Gotten a Healthy Russell Wilson
Russell Wilson’s absence from training camp due to a sore leg has given Justin Fields a chance to work with the first team. While Wilson’s roster spot is secure, his starting quarterback role is in jeopardy. Fields’ solid performance means Wilson must be at his best upon return to maintain his starting position.

If these players don’t improve quickly, their futures with the Steelers are uncertain.
