49ers Training Camp Update: Key Injuries Impacting Team
The San Francisco 49ers took to the practice field on Monday in full pads for the first time, but head coach Kyle Shanahan delivered some concerning injury updates. Edge rusher Drake Jackson is expected to miss the entire training camp, with no set timeline for his return due to significant surgery. Shanahan acknowledged the uncertainty around Jackson’s recovery, noting that the recovery process can be lengthy and unpredictable.
If Jackson remains on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list, he won’t count against the 53-man roster, allowing the team to avoid rushing his return. However, prolonged absence could affect his position on the depth chart, as improvement is only possible through active participation.
Spencer Burford, the 49ers’ starting right guard, is still awaiting further medical evaluation after breaking his hand in practice on Saturday. The injury was heavily casted during Monday’s session, and Shanahan plans to provide more details at his next media briefing.
Rookie wide receiver Jacob Cowing is expected to be sidelined for about ten days due to a hamstring injury. Similarly, Tay Martin is out with a hamstring issue on the same timeline. Rookie running back Isaac Guerendo faces a more severe hamstring injury, which may keep him out for several weeks, according to Shanahan.
Absent from Monday’s practice were:
– Brandon Aiyuk
– Christian McCaffrey
– Kyle Juszczyk
– Isaac Guerendo
– Jon Feliciano
– Jake Brendel
– Spencer Burford
– Jacob Cowing
– Tay Martin
– Nick Bosa
Ricky Pearsall and George Kittle were in pads but did not participate in team drills. Shanahan mentioned that they plan to test Pearsall’s condition and, if all goes well, he is expected to return to practice tomorrow.
