Nets' Jordi Fernandez, Canada beat Greece 86-79 in Paris Olympics

The game, the opening match of group play, was a fast-paced contest. Canada led throughout, but Greece was relentless, always keeping close. Greece struggled initially to score outside Antetokounmpo, as the Canadians effectively shut down the paint. They exploited the international rules, ignoring the three-second violation.

On offense, Dillon Brooks impressed with self-created shots, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander dominated, showcasing NBA prowess against international competition. Despite a 22-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, Canada’s advantage diminished as Greece capitalized on open shots, closing to 26-22 by halftime.

Canada regained momentum in the second quarter, leading 38-29 at 4:26, but Greece’s three-pointers brought them back, making it 39-34 at the break. Antetokounmpo, who sat out initially, contributed 16 points, three rebounds, and two assists, shooting 6-of-9, as Canada held a 48-38 lead.

Jamal Murray, struggling in friendlies, stepped up, running the offense in the second quarter. He finished with eight points, three assists, and a steal. Canada extended their lead in the third, but Greece, led by Antetokounmpo, went on a 13-4 run, closing the gap to 68-60.

The final quarter was tense, with Greece drawing fouls and closing in on Canada. Fernández’s decision to go small with Trey Lyles against Antetokounmpo backfired, as Greece surged to 78-80 with a minute to play. However, Gilgeous-Alexander’s clutch play, followed by free throws from Murray, secured Canada’s 86-79 win.

Fernández praised his team’s effort, emphasizing the need for consistency. “These guys are committed, show up every day ready to work. No ego. It starts with them,” he said. “We need to maintain our pace and physicality.”

Germany Triumphs with Schröder’s Record Performance

In another game, Dennis Schröder led Team Germany to a 97-77 victory over Japan, recording 13 points and 12 assists, setting a team record. The Nets’ website highlighted Schröder’s performance and his role as Germany’s flag-bearer during the Parade of Nations. His stellar showing could boost his trade value, though his status as the Nets’ primary point guard remains pivotal.
