Braves Eye White Sox’s Tommy Pham to Reinforce Outfield Amid Wild Card Challenge
Throughout the season, the Atlanta Braves have held the top spot in the National League Wild Card race. However, injuries to Spencer Strider and Ronald Acuña Jr., among others, have hampered their push in the NL East. For the first time in weeks, the Braves have been overtaken by their division rivals, the New York Mets.
With the trade deadline approaching, Atlanta must act swiftly to remain competitive in the National League. Since Acuña’s injury, the Braves have been in urgent need of an outfielder. While no moves have been made yet, Chicago White Sox veteran Tommy Pham emerges as a compelling option. At 36, Pham, who is slashing .267/.333/.382 with an OPS+ just over 100, is on an expiring deal and would require minimal prospect capital. His value is further highlighted by his platoon ability, boasting a .255/.377/.471 line against left-handed pitchers in 2024, significantly outperforming his right-handed stats. Over his career, Pham has hit .270/.381/.454 against lefties.
A Braves-White Sox Trade for an Outfield Upgrade in Atlanta
The proposed trade would see a backend top 30 prospect from Atlanta’s farm system exchanged for Pham. The White Sox, with Pham’s negative WAR this season and his expiring contract, have little negotiating leverage.
Among the Braves’ prospects, 20-year-old right-handed pitcher Keller fits the bill for Chicago. Though he has struggled in his brief professional career, his youth and potential make him an enticing prospect for the White Sox. This trade would not only address Atlanta’s outfield needs but also provide a cost-effective solution in Pham, who could seamlessly platoon with the Braves’ current outfielders.
