The injury-ridden Atlanta Braves are struggling lately, having lost four consecutive games. They entered today’s MLB games with a 54-46 record, trailing the Philadelphia Phillies by nine games in the National League East.
Injuries have played a significant role in their recent struggles. Spencer Strider, a top Cy Young candidate, is out for the season, and star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. is also sidelined after tearing his ACL in late May. Additionally, Michael Harris, Ozzie Albies, and Max Fried are all currently on the injured list.
Despite these setbacks, the Braves still have a 79% chance of making the playoffs. This situation might prompt front office head Alex Anthopoulos to make a major move before next week’s MLB trade deadline.
Atlanta Braves Among Teams Interested in Tampa Bay Rays Starter Zach Eflin
Rumors suggest that Tampa Bay might put the 30-year-old Eflin on the trade block before the deadline on July 30. The Rays, currently at 51-51, don’t appear to be serious playoff contenders and might trade some veterans for prospects.
If so, the Braves could be a strong landing spot for Eflin. Despite a down season with a 5-7 record, 4.09 ERA, and 1.16 WHIP, Eflin led the American League in wins last season with 16 and had a 3.50 ERA and 1.02 WHIP.
Chris Sale, acquired from the Boston Red Sox last winter, currently leads the Braves’ rotation with a 13-3 record, 2.70 ERA, and 0.96 WHIP. Reynaldo López has also performed well with a 2.12 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. However, with Fried’s injury concerns and Strider out for the season, Atlanta needs additional rotation help.
