After advancing to the ALCS last season, the Houston Astros haven’t quite matched their previous elite form in 2024. While they are on track to secure their fourth consecutive division title, their margin for error is razor-thin, with the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers hot on their heels. One area of concern has been first base, where Jose Abreu was released after starting the season with a dismal OPS of .361. Abreu’s struggles have given Jon Singleton a chance, but he’s also faltering with a .664 OPS.
With the July 30 MLB trade deadline approaching, the Astros are actively seeking an upgrade at first base.
Isaac Paredes Viewed as ‘Perfect Fit’ for Minute Maid Park
According to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, the Astros are not only looking to bolster their pitching staff but are also exploring offensive upgrades, with Tampa Bay Rays’ Isaac Paredes emerging as a potential target.
“Though pitching remains their foremost priority, the Astros are exploring a variety of offensive additions. Multiple sources familiar with their plans have indicated that the team is interested in Rays’ third baseman Isaac Paredes, a power hitter who could be a perfect match for the Crawford Boxes at Minute Maid Park,” said Chandler Rome.
Despite primarily playing third base, Paredes has also appeared in 67 MLB games at first base since 2020. If traded, the Astros are likely to utilize him at first base and may shift him back to third base as needed.
