This offseason has been tough for the Los Angeles Lakers in NBA free agency, as they’ve missed out on several players who could have been significant assets to their team. Klay Thompson, Buddy Hield, and Gary Trent Jr. were among those linked to the Lakers but opted for other teams.
In light of missing out on these targets, the Lakers were hoping to find success with lower-tier free agents. However, they haven’t managed to do so, and they recently saw one of their own free agents, Spencer Dinwiddie, depart to rejoin his previous team. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Dinwiddie has signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks. The guard had previously played with the Mavericks during parts of the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons.
Dinwiddie’s impact with the Lakers was minimal, as he averaged just 6.8 points, 2.4 assists, and 1.7 rebounds in 24.2 minutes per game over 28 games. His performance didn’t improve in the playoffs, where he averaged only 3.0 points, 1.6 assists, and 1.4 rebounds in 14.6 minutes per game during the first-round series against the Denver Nuggets.
With Dinwiddie not returning, the Lakers will need to seek out another veteran on a minimum contract to provide depth and support for D’Angelo Russell and Gabe Vincent.
