The Los Angeles Dodgers are once again on the hunt for starting pitchers as the MLB trade deadline approaches. However, a notable MLB insider has revealed that their strategy for 2024 will significantly differ from last year.
Currently, the Dodgers hold a commanding seven-game lead in the National League West and boast one of the best records in baseball. They are in a competitive race with the league-leading Philadelphia Phillies to build the most formidable roster for the playoffs.
The team has been linked to several players, including Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet and Detroit Tigers’ Tarik Skubal, ahead of the July 30 deadline. This year, their approach remains focused on acquiring more pitching.
ESPN MLB reporter Alden Gonzalez disclosed that the Dodgers’ strategy for enhancing their pitching staff in 2024 will differ from 2023. According to Gonzalez, “The same Dodgers team that traded for Tyler Glasnow, signed Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and brought back Clayton Kershaw is expected to aggressively pursue high-end starting pitchers this month.” He added, “They’re targeting frontline starters, unlike last year when they acquired rotation fillers like Lance Lynn.”
If they fail to secure a top-tier starter, the Dodgers might shift their focus to strengthening the bullpen. This is why Crochet is a logical target for them, regardless of his role as a starter.
Given their status as a serious title contender, the Dodgers’ front office seems to believe that only high-impact additions will enhance their chances in the postseason, especially after being swept in the division series last year. This suggests their 2023 strategy was less effective.
