On Wednesday, as the rookie phase of minicamp kicks off, the Chiefs made a roster move by signing undrafted wide receiver Kyle Sheets from Slippery Rock. Sheets, who initially joined the Saints as a priority free agent after the NFL Draft, was a two-time All-PSAC selection and an AP Division II All-American. Standing 6’4″ and weighing 220 pounds, he had a standout season with 76 receptions for 1,186 yards and 17 touchdowns, including a 210-yard game against Millersville. With Kansas City’s wide receiver group already deep—featuring standout Nikko Remigio and other established veterans—adding Sheets could intensify the competition, though he may end up on the practice squad this year.
In his college career, Sheets played 51 games, totaling 154 catches for 2,440 yards and 29 touchdowns, averaging 15.8 yards per reception and demonstrating his ability as a deep threat with excellent ball-tracking skills.
While Sheets may not be part of the Chiefs’ 2024 plans, he could potentially find a role in future rosters. His addition aims to energize a position group that faced criticism last season, despite Kansas City’s success, including leading the NFL in drops (44) while securing their second consecutive Super Bowl win. The team has already made moves to strengthen the wide receiver room, signing Hollywood Brown and trading up for Xavier Worthy in the draft. Adding Sheets is a low-risk, high-reward move that could bring additional competition to the group.
Though it’s unlikely Sheets will significantly alter the depth chart this year, his potential is intriguing, and it will be interesting to see how he performs in camp.
