Speculation has been rampant about Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams potentially reuniting with Aaron Rodgers on the New York Jets.

Former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason suggested that Adams might be seeking a way out of Las Vegas and even provided a possible timeline for the move. “The dead cap for the Raiders this year is $40 million if they traded him,” Esiason stated on WFAN. “I’m hearing this could happen in late August or early September. The cap hit for him is $25 million.”

The Netflix series ‘Receiver’ highlighted Adams’ frustrations during the 2023 season with the Raiders, particularly related to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and head coach Josh McDaniels. This portrayal has fueled speculation that Adams might force a trade to the Jets to reunite with Rodgers. Esiason commented on how Adams might approach the situation if he desires to leave.

“I’m not sure why it would take that long, but Davante will never publicly say he wants to leave the Raiders,” Esiason said on WFAN. “However, in the ‘Receiver’ program, he says, ‘I gotta get out of here before I get killed.’ This suggests he wants out of Vegas, though he’s unlikely to say it publicly. Instead, he might communicate this to his agent, much like he did in Green Bay.”

Rodgers added to the speculation, mentioning he can’t wait to play with Adams “again” at a golf outing, as reported by WFAN. Whether Adams truly wants to leave Las Vegas and if the Jets can facilitate such a trade remains to be seen.

Does Davante Adams Make Sense for the Jets?

If the Jets were to trade for Adams, they would incur a cap hit of about $25 million, with future hits of just over $44 million for 2025 and 2026. The Jets would need to be confident in their cap space to absorb Adams’ contract.

Another consideration is whether Adams is worth the investment given the Jets’ current wide receiver lineup. They likely feel good about Garrett Wilson, an established star, and free agent signing Mike Williams, who, despite being older and somewhat injury-prone, is productive when healthy. Other receivers include Xavier Gipson, Allen Lazard, and Malachi Corley.

While Wilson and Williams form a solid duo, adding a talent like Adams would bolster their offense, although the financial implications might be challenging.

Additionally, other receivers could become available around the NFL Trade Deadline, offering the Jets alternative options.
