The Dallas Cowboys’ three biggest stars—pass rusher Micah Parsons, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and quarterback Dak Prescott—are all up for contract extensions, resulting in the team making no significant additions or improvements this offseason.
There is a growing sentiment that Prescott may not receive an extension soon and could play out the final year of his contract before becoming a free agent next offseason. According to Ian Rapoport, Prescott has been in talks with the Cowboys about a new deal, with Rapoport highlighting the significant leverage Prescott holds in these negotiations.
From The Insiders on @NFLNetwork: #Cowboys QB Dak Prescott mentioned that there have been “conversations” about his contract. With Prescott holding unprecedented leverage, time is ticking. Prescott had an outstanding 2023 regular season, throwing for 4,516 yards and an NFL-high 36 touchdowns, making him an MVP candidate.
He led Dallas to a 12-5 record, but once again faltered in the playoffs, resulting in a blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round.
Some believe the Cowboys might be better off moving on from Prescott due to his repeated playoff failures and the significant cap space they would save. Rapoport noted that if the Cowboys extend Prescott, his new deal could be worth around $60 million a year.
The quarterback market has surged recently, with Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who isn’t as accomplished as Prescott, securing a five-year, $275 million deal.
The wide receiver market has also skyrocketed, making it challenging for Dallas to afford Prescott, Lamb, and Parsons at their market values.
