The Denver Broncos initially saw potential in Javonte Williams, viewing him as one of the NFL’s rising running backs after a promising rookie season in 2021. As a second-round pick from North Carolina, Williams amassed over 1,200 yards of total offense and 7 touchdowns, including 903 rushing yards. However, subsequent seasons have tempered expectations, especially after a knee injury cut short his 2022 campaign after just four games. In 2023, despite leading the Broncos in rushing with 774 yards and adding 228 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns, Williams struggled, averaging just 3.6 yards per carry.

Head coach Sean Payton remains optimistic about Williams’ recovery, noting that complete healing typically takes up to two years. Payton acknowledged the challenges Williams faced in regaining full confidence and speed, particularly evident as the team navigated a tumultuous season marked by internal conflicts involving star quarterback Russell Wilson and coaching transitions.

The Broncos have not had a 1,000-yard rusher since Phillip Lindsay in 2019, underscoring their ongoing need for stability in the running game. Looking ahead, Denver drafted Audric Estime from Notre Dame in the 2024 NFL Draft to bolster their backfield depth. Estime, recognized for his strong college performance with 1,341 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns in 2023, is seen as a potential key contributor as the Broncos aim to fortify their offensive lineup and support their quarterbacks effectively in the upcoming season.
