The Minnesota Vikings have set high expectations for former Michigan QB JJ McCarthy, whom they drafted with the No. 11 overall pick in April. Although it’s difficult to gauge a rookie quarterback’s future NFL performance based solely on OTAs, McCarthy’s initial sessions were less than impressive. According to The Athletic, McCarthy missed several passes during the first two days, including grounding one to fullback C.J. Ham and having another tipped by safety Theo Jackson.
However, McCarthy showed improvement on Thursday, completing a laser pass to tight end Robert Tonyan and a precise throw to receiver Trent Sherfield. Tracking his progress is challenging due to numerous variables, but Thursday was his most efficient day so far. McCarthy is adapting to new concepts, receivers, and faster defensive movements, which has led to some inconsistency. Despite moments of frustration, he shared positive interactions with fellow quarterbacks and receivers after successful throws.
Tight end Robert Tonyan praised McCarthy for his bold passing style, although the coaching staff and players have generally refrained from making public comments about his performance. This cautious approach aims to build McCarthy’s confidence by allowing him to make and learn from mistakes. Head coach Kevin O’Connell and his team believe this is the best strategy for long-term success.
Currently, Sam Darnold appears to have the edge for the starting job for the 2024 season. Darnold has displayed calmness and preparation, impressing teammates and coaches alike with his consistent performance. He connected well with second-year receiver Jordan Addison and star receiver Justin Jefferson, showing strong anticipation and touch.
McCarthy left Michigan as one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in the school’s history, boasting a 27-1 record and holding several program records, including the lowest interception rate (1.54%), highest completion percentage (67.6%), and best touchdown-to-interception ratio (4.5:1). His dedication to mastering the Vikings playbook, reportedly studying it nightly with his girlfriend Katya Kuropas, demonstrates his commitment to succeeding in the NFL. Whether he starts this season or in 2025, McCarthy is diligently preparing for his opportunity.
